This is a great Intro ride to Off Road (Jeep Track) mountain biking. The descent through Doi Suthep National Park presents us with great views of the Mae Ping Valley below, amazing forest landscapes which makes this Trip one of the most scenic and popular Mountain Bike Rides in Chiang Mai and all without traffic..
TRIP
DESCRIPTION DOWNHILL, UP COUNTRY RIDE National forest and plantation access jeep tracks with ruts, rock gardens, mud and sand traps, besides a few steep down hills sections, great for beginners and Nature lovers.
Stunning Views, facing east overlooking the Mae Ping Valley,
at 1000 m elevation.
Hotel pickup is at 930 am. After preparations and signup at the our shop , a 45 minute drive takes us to the top of Doi Pui Mountain, 1600m elev.
Here in the Doi Suthep National Park above Chiang Mai, we begin our journey.
At our starting point we make final preparation on your bikes, Beginners enjoy a thorough safety briefing and a test ride confirms rider and equipment are ready.
This first part of the trip to the Coffee Plantation helps us to evaluate your riding ability. We continue training you in Downhill Riding Techniques.
The mountain top orientation and the final “Role by” confirms a safe departure
The jeep track leads through large tree growth and the cooler temperature becomes very pleasant with the wind blowing in our faces. Loud less on bikes we take in the Forest sounds and our full concentration sharpens our senses. The gentle, with at times steep downhill terrain keeps on our toes , Absolute no lengthy up hills disturb the rhythm and spirit of the ride, At our first resting point at the Coffee Plantation, home of the Arabic Coffee, we enjoy the beautiful views of Chiang Mai and the Plantations below.
The winding Trail leads us to the Coffee Plantation,
our favorite place to regroup.
At 1400m elevation the plantation grows the well known
and delicious Arabic Coffee
Enjoying the coolness and sounds of the forest
we continue to the Hmong village
We engage with the locals and some have gotten to know us well, still largely untouched by the mainstream though one can feel the shift in priorities. The Hmong People here tend to their hill side farm land granted by the National Park. At the right season you can stuff your belly with Lychees, Bananas, carrots, I would cook the radish and corn though.
The challenging terrain of the route captures our full attention. The wild growth of the forest hugs the path. The trip is at a relaxed pace, but for those who have experience single tracks paralleling the jeep route are now the focus. So if you are escorting the better half you can take a little detour and get your technical single track fix.
Ken and Aidan the MTB legends of Doi Suthep on single Track
With plenty of view points and puddles to challenge we ride towards Lake Huay Tueng Tao at the base of Doi Pui Mountain. At the Lake our favorite Lunch spot prepares the well deserved meal, a cold drink and the local fruit in season for us.
At the Lake our favorite Lunch spot prepares the well deserved meal for us.
After a cool drink or maybe even a swim we glance at the mountain that just gave us a 4000 foot elevation drop. After Lunch we head back to Chiang Mai the lazy way, in the truck and full of great memories.
View looking south east over Chiang Mai City on the Eagles Route at 1400m

TRIP DESCRIPTION
Cross Country Ride with downhill
National forest and plantation access dirt road with ruts, rock gardens, mud and sand traps, some steep down hills, turning into advanced single track completely unused by vehicular traffic followed by a long steep uphill, great if you are in top shape. Very rewarding trip if you are an experienced mountain biker.
Nature takes back , once a double track vanishes into technical single track
Hotel pickup is at 930 am. After preparations and signup at the our shop , a 45 minute drive takes us to the top of Doi Pui Mountain, 1600m elev.
Here in the Doi Suthep National Park above Chiang Mai, we begin our journey
Our safety briefing at the top confirms that participants are ready to tackle this hard xc ride. An easy descent brings with a couple uphills on the way to the Coffee Plantation, here we regroup and some might choose to switch to a less strenuous and technically demanding ride, for those ready to go the short break at the Plantation gets us ready to head on.
Only reasonably accessible by mountain bike the rewards are obvious
The gully at 3200 feet elevation facing east is always lush.
Riding DH on flowing Jeep Track we turn west at the forest intersection where we, enjoying higher speeds reach the High Country Royal Planting Project, we enter the great divide, a barely used and unmaintained path. What once was double track has over the years turned into very technical single track riding.
We practice our art of Mountain Biking, moving in and out of ruts, over rocks and roots, and quickly arrive in the deep jungle gully between the two mountains. Now at 3200 feet elevation, we notice the tropical forest emerging from the pine woods, with huge banana leaves and plenty of bamboo filtering the light.
Once at the bottom of the gully we begin a long and rewarding uphill back to 4100 feet, some ride, some walk, concentrating and preserving energy on the way to our summit.
A 200 year old bamboo grove greets us at the top, where a lengthy and well deserved break is taken.
Ready for the climb back out to 4100 feet elevation
Continuing along the high road with fantastic views of the valley below we ride a gradual , long downhill. Warmed up we play in and out of ruts and holes, sand traps and rocks. The challenging terrain forces us to maintain full concentration on riding and moves us into ” the zone “ of the sport. Soon the Lake appears below us and the final run is all single track to the bottom. Where a well deserved lunch awaits us.

Everyone is encouraged to practice the newly learned techniques.
Local Hill Tribe Hmong People farm through out Suthep National Park
After the coffee break at the Coffee Plantation we keep riding downhill until we reach our route west into the next valley. Fantastic forest riding with great views from open plantations, as we pass refreshing mountain creeks.
With only short steep up hills we wind our way across the valley, past small farm houses while witnessing the local hill tribes in there natural environment. Then we ride further down hill between plantations and forest with beautiful pine trees changing to eucalyptus growth on the way down to the Mae Ping Valley floor.
Enjoying the many great views off Suthep Mountain only accessible by MTB
Our experienced guides help navigate through the vast forest land
The rarely used forest road presents the rider with plenty of challenges. This forest /farm road is hardly traveled and is perfect for mountain biking, allowing speed, but challenging your riding abilities. This is very secluded riding and you will feel deep appreciation for the local ecology. Arriving at Lake Huay Tueng Tao we are expected at our favorite restaurant right at the lake where everyone meets up again. After a good lunch, drink and a taste of the local fruit we travel back to the city the lazy way by truck and good memories.
